  • A building permit is required if you erect, construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, improve, convert, or demolish a building or structure. This includes not only building construction or remodeling, but also such things as mobile home placement, wood stove installation, or plumbing modifications.  The Building Department's website has more detailed information on what type of projects need a permit.

  • A building permit is not required for the following residential structures:

    • Single-story detached structures used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses and similar uses - under 400 square feet of floor area, 6 feet away from existing buildings, and classified as "U" occupancies. 
    • Fences not over 7 feet high.
    • Retaining walls under 4 feet without a surcharge.
    • Uncovered decks that are 30 inches or less above grade at the edge of the deck and 3 feet beyond.
    • Prefabricated, above grade swimming pools, less than 24 inches deep and under 5,000-gallon capacity.

    The Building Department should be contacted for more information and to confirm that your project adheres to our building codes.

  • Visit our Multipurpose Map for more information on critical areas.  Our GIS portal has lots of information embedded on the map of the county and you can zero in on your property for even more detail. Click on the left hand menu for the option to view layers including a layer called Critical Areas.  If you select this, an overlay of designated Critical Areas will show up on the map.

  • All Short Term rentals in Clallam County are REQUIRED to have a Fire, Life, Safety inspection.  The Building Department will walk you though scheduling that inspection.  Make sure all permits that are required for any building are current as well.
