An infraction is:

• An act prohibited by law.
• Not classified as a crime.
• Handled through civil procedures, not criminal courts.

Types of Infractions in Washington State:

Traffic infractions – Issued by State or local law enforcement for violation traffic laws.

• Examples include:
• Speeding
• Using a cell phone while driving
• Causing an accident
• Seat belt violations
• No proof of liability insurance

Non- Traffic Infractions – Often issued by city officials and code enforcement

• Illegal parking
• Littering
• Nuisance Violations
• Some pet violations

Important Notice about your ticket: You must respond within 30 days of the date the ticket was issued. Failure to response can result in the suspension of your driver’s license.

You have several options:

1. In person – Bring your ticket to the front counter at District Court I
2. By mail – Mail the ticket with one of the option boxes checked (top right of the ticket)
3. By Paying the ticket (this counts as a response)

If you would like to set a mitigation or contested* hearing for your ticket, you have the following options.

1. Mail infraction with the appropriate box checked to Clallam County District Court I.
2. In person -Come to the District Court I window and request a hearing.
3. Email web_dc1@clallamcountywa.gov and request a hearing.

If you are unable to appear in person but would still like to mitigate your ticket, you can mitigate it online using our Public Infraction Mitigation Response Form.

If you would like to request a payment plan, check the appropriate box on your ticket and mail it to Clallam County District Court I. Once we receive it, we will send you a payment plan slip. Your payment plan starts when you make your first $50 payment. Your payment is due 30 days after each payment is made.

In some cases, you may be eligible to defer a traffic infraction. Meaning you avoid having the ticket go on your driving record if certain conditions are met.

Eligibility for Deferral:

You may qualify if:

• You have a good driving history
• You do not have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
• You have not used a deferral in the past 7 years.

Requirements to successfully complete a deferral if approved:

• No new traffic violations for the next 12 months.
• Pay the required fee

If you fail to meet the requirements to complete the deferral, your original ticket will be committed and reported to the Department of Licensing (DOL).

If you would like to request this a deferral, you can by the following options:

• In-person – Come to the District Court I window.
• By phone – 360-417-2560
• By email – web_dc1@clallamcountywa.gov 

If you do not pay or respond to your ticket within 30 days:

• The court will find the ticket as committed.
• The court will notify Department of Licensing
• A $52 late penalty will be added to your original ticket amount.
• If not paid, within 30 days after penalty is added, your ticket will be referred to a collection agency.
• This could also lead to license suspension.

If you request a hearing but missed it:

• Your payment becomes due immediately.
• The court will notify the department of Licensing
• A $52 late penalty will be added to your original ticket.
• This could also lead to license suspension.

If you need to request a continuance of your hearing, you must request the continuance in writing or in person. You cannot continue your hearing over the phone. Clerks are authorized to only continue hearings one time. Please have your name, case number and hearing date ready.

If you have received notice that you are in collections, you will need to contact the collection agency to set up payment arrangements.

Pre-Collection – Ticket was sent to collections less that 31 days ago.

We are unable to accept payment on a ticket once it is sent to collections unless you can pay all of the fines and fees in collections at one time.
